 expandable/collapsable menu

i am trying to create an expandable/collapsable menu for the navigation of a site i am building. it isn't anything overly elaborate, but all the scripts for this type of menu seem to only work with text, and mine has graphical buttons. this is the closest thing i've found to what i need...

it's nice because i can hide a table inside it. however, when i tried replacing the text in the header with an image it malfunctioned horribly, also there is a really large space created between the header and its inner content which i would like to eliminate. i'm a real novice when it comes to scripting so i'm not sure if this is even possible. if anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated.

I want to avoid frames, popups, and plug-ins (like java and flash). Google turned up plenty of scripts for drop down menus however the only ones I was able to find where either directory trees or drop down menus like those used by windows apps (neither of which is not what I want). Odds are, what I'm looking for is indeed on Google and I'm simply not using the right search terms, this site turned up so I came here. I can obviously understand if you're too busy to answer the questions of a novice, you do, however, seem to find plenty of time to be condescending. I was not trying to be confrontational I don't see why you have to be. This is a discussion forum about advanced web design topics such as scripting and DHTML so it seemed an appropriate place to ask. It is likely that I made a mistake and this site is only for 'experts.' Unfortunately I'm not aware of a more suitable resource.
