 Site Design Critique

Hi,

First, I want to point out that I go through way too many redesigns. I know I'm just trying to make one that I like.

And I think I have finally found it. Please see the design and tell me what you think.

It still needs work (the navigation does not exist yet, for instance). However, I'd just like some input on how it looks and feels...

If this one is good, I will convert it to a Wordpress template and use it on my site (I'm using Wordpress as the CMS for the time being).

As always, constructive criticism is welcomed.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris, don't go into discussions on colors. it's your site and you created it to your likings. if you're going to change your colorscheme on request, perhaps you're better off with a "personalize this site to your personal taste"-button (hey, good idea! anyone with some extra spare time?). If Monte likes a dull green background with flashing red buttons, let him change his personal site. saves you a lot of work. Sorry Monte, but when I launched my site for a customer, I got a lot of e-mails like this: I'd change the logo, I'd change the menu, why don't you use (random color) as a background,... I just asked the customer for whom I created the site: do you like it as it is? He did. End of discussion. Now, non-working items, missing images, ... that's another story. And yes, go with css, saves a lot of time when you plan on changing lay-out and so, later, after a year or so :-)

Chris, I really like the bg_top.gif from your current home page. Very professional looking. Maybe you could change it's color to suit whatever you finally decide on... I would reuse it/resize it for use at the top under your menubar.

I also like the sidebar of information from your original design. Anyone looking with a 600x800 rez will have more choices of what you have to offer. I like the uncluttered feeling of your new design, so this design enhancement may challenge you a bit.

I wonder if the white space on the right of your headings is on purpose? I'd personally like to see it extend all the way accross the page.

Have fun!

Sincerely,

RobinAnn

@Monte:
I'll work on the links font size, etc...I can see that that could be hard for many users to see clearly.

@RobinAnn:
The design currently at my site is a stock Wordpress design, and I'd really like everything on this design to be original. I'll think about doing some type of pattern for the background, though.
The sidebar, I think, will go. The display of different information which would normally go into the sidebar, though, is a valid concern. I'm going to see how it will work with the current design, and if necessary, some sidebar-like thing will be integrated into the design.
Are you using IE? If so, the white space beside heading blocks is unintentional, but I don't know how to get rid of it. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

A general note:
I'm going to leave the colors as they are for now. I just might add, though, a "color picker" thing which would let the user pick any color they wanted for the accent color (currently orange). Only one image would have to be generated (the background of the navigation).

Alright, everyone:
Here it is.

Have fun!

Very cool, Chris:

 a {
  text-decoration: none;
  border-bottom: 1px solid #;
 }

 a:hover {
  /*border: none;*/
  text-decoration: underline;
 }

This neat little trick is bound to show up somewhere in a new design of mine - as long as you don't mind me snagging it up! I saw something similar on a tutorial but it was done with background images and image swapping. This way is SO much easier :)

The simpler, the better...
