http://name.com does not work - www.name.com - does work... solutions?

Hi,

My firm's website www.NancyLandi.com has a problem with the address. When our customers type http://NancyLandi.com - the website does not load. I registered the website with GoDaddy and it's hosted with Fibertel in Argentina.

GoDaddy said they cannot make the changes necessary to correct the problem, and Fibertel told us that GoDaddy needs to make the changes. This is making me crazy, because I can imagine we're losing a sizeable amount of traffic due to this issue.

My website designer wrote to me and said this: "For the http://nancylandi.com, it means that the sub-domain is "empty", there is no subdomain name instead of the WWW, thats the tricky part. Neither GoDaddy nor Fibertel, on their Domain Managers, let you create an empty subdomain. I talked with the tech support at Fibertel and they told me it wasnt available to their hosting service. If the guys at GoDaddy can do it, it must be something one has to ask by phone, cause their manager doesnt let you do it. The question to ask is whether you or them can create a http://nancylandi.com (no www) subdomain, that forwards to http://www.nancylandi.com"

I've spoken to GoDaddy.com - they will not fix it. Fibertel has been unresponsive. Any ideas, advice, etc would be SO appreciated. And I believe strongly in reciprocity. =)

Cheers,
Christian

try in you domain manager: WWW A [ip adress]
else find a hostingservice which lets you manage your DNS yourself.

Let's see. Dig and nslookup concur:

Name:    nancylandi.com
Address: 200.49.136.156

Name:    www.nancylandi.com
Address: 200.49.136.156

Meaning both point to the same addres. Thus, the problem is located at the webserver. (Most likely with their PHBs because their techies should know better, then again maybe they don't.)

When queried the server responds to nancylandi.com with:

400 Bad Request
Connection: close
Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 06:10:10 GMT
Content-Length: 39
Content-Type: text/html
Client-Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 06:10:12 GMT
Client-Peer: 200.49.136.156:80
Client-Response-Num: 1

And to www.nancylandy.com with:

200 OK
Cache-Control: no-cache
Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 06:10:19 GMT
Pragma: no-cache
Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
Content-Length: 5485
Content-Type: text/html
Expires: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 06:09:19 GMT
Client-Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2007 06:10:20 GMT
Client-Peer: 200.49.136.156:80Client-Response-Num: 1Set-Cookie: ASPSESSIONIDSCTRASRR=ADHLCNIAGEAEAEMKCMAOFAOM; path=/
X-Powered-By: ASP.NET

Tell them to make sure their server responds not only to reqeusts to www.nancylandi.com, but serves the same content to nancylandi.com. At the very least a 301 redirect to www.~ should be given.

They should also know to use a decent webserver. Obviously, they don't. 8)
