 Phantom Services

Hello Forum.

I have had the unfortunate experience where I have had to uninstall one version of SQL Server (the express version for x86) because I need to install a different version (Enterprise vesion for x64).

Here is what I did.  I first stopped the services.  I then uninstalled all the programs that are mentioned as being SQL.  I Then renamed a few directories so as to prevent the services from restarting.  Then I rebooted.

But the services are still there -- at least the names of the SQL Services are still there in the Services list.  And this is what prevents me from adaquately installing the new version of SQL Server.

How do I remove these SQL Services from the list of Services?

Even after running the Windows Cleanup Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301), the services are still there.

Well, that's... unconventional.

However, one possible solution to remove your zombie services would be to do a clean re- and uninstall of the SQL Server Express version that brought along those nasty services.

Another option is to use the "sc" command to remove the services manually. It works on Win NT, 2K, XP and possibly Vista. To do so, simply type "sc" at a windows command prompt to see how it works.
Oh, and pay attention to not remove services that you'll be missing sometime...
